linktext[2]="<img border='1' src='../images/about_lakes/cannobio_125.jpg' width='125' height='94' align='left'><b>Cannobio</b> is the first town in Italy, for those driving southwards along the lake shore, is also one of the best Maggiore towns, being far enough up the western shore to be left quieter than the towns closer to the Lombardy Plain.  <br><br>A stone at the edge of the town records that the townsfolk played their part in the Italian War of independence by attacking an Austrian fleet on the lake in 1859.  The town is unfortunately split by the main road which makes it seem fragmented, but the old quarter with its narrow winding streets is delightful and deserves a visit."

Quarrying helped the town prosper, though today it is almost purely a tourist village, with a line of villas opposite the excellent lakeside flower gardens. <br><br>Queen Victoria once stayed at the pink Castello Branca, set on the hillside in the southern part of the village; Wagner came here too, and Winston and Clementine Churchill honeymooned in Baveno."

The town is tranquil, yet bustling with livelihood. Around the old city center are several cafes and restaurants, and along its streets are little appetizing delicatessens, bakeries and charming little shops. A lively market takes place in the streets every Saturday and in the summer there is a weekly fair of antiques and handcrafts.<br><br>The town's unspoiled surrounding area is rich with outdoor activities (available in both Italy and Switzerland). Travelers can enjoy trekking, mountain biking in the surrounding mountains, horse back riding, golfing (in Menaggio), lake activities or simply walk peacefully amidst the picturesque old towns, scattered in between the mountains."
