The Lombardy Region |
Lake como is 50 km long and the deepest of Europe( 400 m) , once what now is the lake was a gletcher, in fact signs of it can be noticed nearby , where you find hugde stones, which rolled over ice towards the Po valley. The lake is surrounded by 1000 m high mountains, lovely for walks, hiking and biking. Along the lake coast you can visist beautiful villa's, built in the 18-19th century by wealthy milanese people who had their summerhouses on the lake for its beautiful scenery and temperate climate ( Milan in summer is hot and sticky). Especially near Como-city on both sides of the lake you find wonderful country houses, some of them are open to the public In Moltrasio are a few: villa Passalaqua, Villa Rosa , in Cernobbio Villa d'Este ( now a renowed 5star hotel) , Villa Erba ( now exhibition grounds), villa Olmo ( very often used for art exhibitions, it has also a swimming pool )Fortunately these villa'sare all inhabited either still by the milanese families or by the new rich and the beautiful like footballplayers and filmstars. Still Lake Como has kept its charm, the coastal villages have not changed : visit them by foot or by boat and you will be amazed! weekly markets everywhere for that special italian bargain or to buy fresh cheese, or vegetables, where the locals have their chat and you a cappuccino on a terrace of a coffeebar. Daily trips to the high alps ( 130 km St. Moritz), Como , (historical centre with cathedral ), Milan ( trendy shops and trade fairs) 50 km, Lugano for that "swiss " touch at 25 km. and for early risers: visit Venice or Verona ( opera) on a day out trip. |

Moltrasio is a very characteristic village, famous for its waterfall , the water of which jumps away under 3 romans bridges. A few good restaurants, the boatstop , a "lido" which is a little sandy beach ( for which you have to pay an entrance fee). some shops, bank, postoffice and church, you donot need a car to survive! good panoramic footpaths leading to Cernobbio or Laglio or high up the mountains. From the house and garden you have a wonderful view over the lake and mountains. |
